Tony, I hope that you won't mind if I correct you. The external appearance of Ivernia and Saxonia was altered in 1962/63 when the ships were rebuilt in order to make them more suited to cruising. They emerged from this refitting with new names, Franconia and Carmania. Both ships were given extensive lido decks and their aft superstructure was extended on three decks to incorporate glazed screens to protect the newly-created sun terraces and pool deck. Internally the decor and furnishings of the public rooms were completely changed (the original decor of both ships when they had entered service had not found favour with the travelling public, who found them to be too modern). The passenger capacity of both ships was reduced and most of the cabins were also restyled or refitted with new furnishings. When Franconia and Carmania first entered service for the Russians as Fedor Shalyapin and Leonid Sobinov respectively they retained all their Cunard furnishings and decor, though by that time it was looking a bit tired. Gradually this was mostly changed and their Russian owners fitted the ships with unsympathetic chrome-framed furniture.

Thank you for all your wonderful photos from Sydney - in these days looking at those ships is "balsam for the soul" and brings back good memories.
