Description:

HMAS Adelaide in Sydney Harbour during the US fleet visit July - August 1925. Was known as HMAS Long-delayed owning to her excessive building time at Cockatoo Island, being laid down in November 1915 & commissioned in August 1922. From a negative in my collection.

My grandfather served aboard the Adelaide during the early part of WW2. At that time she was still a coal burner. He would tell the story they were patrolling off South Africa when they heard the the Graf Spee was it the area. He claimed the bunkers were swept clean to get back to Cape Town a maximum speed to avoid a possible meeting with the pocket battleship.
