This ship was never named "USNS LEROY A MENDONCA" in US Navy service. As operated by the Department of the Navy's Military Sealift Command, she was simply USNS MENDONCA (T AKR 303). Effective December 1, 2022, she was transferred from the Navy to the US Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD), renamed LEROY A. MENDONCA, and given Official Number 1329690. Under the new name she is simply a civilian merchant marine vessel, and should not have the USNS prefix or a pennant number.
