built 1882 by Burmeister & Wain, Copenhagen, as Danish sail training ship GEORG STAGE; sunk 1905 after collision with the cargo ship ASCONA OF LEITH, was afterwards lifted and repaired; 1934 sold to Alain Villiers, who renamed it JOSEPH CONRAD; 1936 sold to George Huntington Hartford and 1939 to US Maritime Commission, sailing again as sail training ship until 1945; from 1947 museum ship at Mystic Seaport Museum, USA;
