Description:

26/09/1981, Suva Fiji.

Photo taken from the stern of the Shell tanker 'Eburna'.

It appears that the ship is having some of her bulk cargo, possibly tapioca, being discharged by evacuators -the yellow mechanical devices sitting on the deck - and placed into the the tall hoppers on the quayside.
Wherever tapioca is handled, if indeed this is, it is accompanied by clouds of white dust which permeates everywhere on the ship.

This French built general cargo ship, with refrigerated capacity, had just been bought from Greek owners by the 'Sofrana Fiji Express Line' of Wallis & Futuna Islands, and registered at Mata-Utu, the capital city.

Launched on 24/01/1964, and completed during March 1964 by Chantier naval la Ciotat, La Ciotat, France (221)
9,785 g.t. and 13,525 dwt., as:
'Cypria' to 1977,
'Polydora' to 1981, and
'Capitaine Wallis' until sold to India for demolition.

Vessel arrived at Alang on 08/03/1996.
+++++

In 1971 the vessel was lengthened by the addition of an extra cargo hold, to become 7,832 g.t.

More memories Rick,
She used to load grain in Geelong about every 2nd voyage for discharge in Fiji. Also discharged coconut oil in Geelong, carried in her deep tanks. Last of the "proper" cargo ships routinely seen . . .
Cheers,
tropic

Hi Tropic, glad to be of assistance to your nostalgic memories!
I have always been fascinated by the other empire's (France) shipping companies and routes. Messageries Maritime and Chargeurs Réunis, for example, had some wonderful and handsome ships.
We live on memories!
Rick
