Description:

PRINCESS MAY aground on Sentinel Island, Alaska, 5th August 1910. Built in 1888 as CASS at Hebburn in England, later names ARTHUR, NINGCHOW and HATING in the China coast trade from 1888 to 1901. Sold to Canadian Pacific Railway for the coast service from British Columbia to Alaska and renamed PRINCESS MAY. After the stranding on Sentinel Island salavaged on 3th September 1910 and repaired for $ 115.000, same time converted from coal to oil fuel. In 1919 the ship was sold to the Princess May Steamship Company and transferred to the Caribbean. In the early 1930's the ship was deliberately sunk. To better explain the situation, keep in mind, the typical tidal change on the Lynn Canal is between 16 and 21 feet, and occurs twice daily!
