Description:
BERLIN call sign DHLO
This is a mysterious one for me. The photo is from about the 1950's. Undoubted is this: ship's name and owner, Hugo Stinnes (subsididary unknown). A copy of Schwadtke from 1962 shows her (under that name) in the drawings section, but no mention of her in the data section can be found (1962 is the only copy I have seen). There is something mighty odd about the funnel. On this photo the stack is a rather undersized affair, but the same puny thing can be seen on other photos in the collection this one comes from. Note that it shows what might look like the Horn Line colours. A few months later though the funnel looks much more "normal"-sized on other photos, still in the same collection, now clearly showing Stinnes colours (again). Details and history would be much appreciated.

BERLIN was built in 1921 by A/B Götawerken (353) as CANADA for Rederi A/B Nordstjernen, Stockholm.
1941- charter for Ministry of War Transport, London/Furness Withy, Liverpool
1950- BERLIN, Transozean Schiffahrts-GmbH, Hamburg
1952- Korrespondenz-Reeder Hugo Stinnes, Hamburg
1953- KR Hugo Stinnes Zweigniederlassung Brennstoff-& Schiffahrts GmbH, Hamburg
1953- again to Transozean
1958- sold to the breakers, laid up first
1959- broken up at Atlas-Werke, Bremen.
In 1950/51 BERLIN was chartered to Horn-Linie, Hamburg (your funnel colours) for two Westindies round voyages.
That small funnel was at sometime replaced like on WOLFSBURG ex BALBOA:
