Description:
The English passenger ship "Arandora Star", built in 1927 from the Blue Star Line, visiting Port of Aarhus on 20th August 1937.
At the start of World War II and was sunk in controversial circumstances by a German U-boat on 2th July 1940 with the loss of 865 lives as it carried Italian and German interned civilians to Canada on this crossing.
It was in the early hours of 2th July 1940 that the SS Arandora Star – a British passenger ship requisitioned for military duties at the start of the 1939 conflict – sailing unescorted from Liverpool to St John’s, Newfoundland, was intercepted and torpedoed by a German U-47 submarine patrolling the Atlantic waters, 75 miles off the Irish coast of Donegal.
