How noisy are these modern engines? I remember having a serious headache when I went to the engine room for the first time while I was an apprentice officer. I was so glad to have chosen the deck department.

A lot less noisy when wearing ear defenders. In my experience, it’s screaming turbochargers that make the worst noise.

Interesting picture Vlad.
Am I correct that I see a turbo by-pass valve/line.
If so, do you know the exact purpose? Is the turbo having to much capacity on certain m.e. loads or is it to have more capacity on the exhaust gas boiler (turbo-generator?)?

Hi Roy,

This should be this "TC" abbreviation in engine's designation: turbocharger cutout allows for disabling of a turbocharger for low-load operation, improving the performance of the remaining turbocharger, and reducing SFOC.

Thanks for the reply.
Did some research myself and found in following document: https://man-es.com/applications/projectguides/2stroke/content/special_pg/PG_7020-0145.pdf
that it has to do with NOx Tier II and Tier III requirements.
The valve/line we are looking at (what I was referring too) is the EGB valve on page 17 in above document.
An interesting read if you want to know about the techinical solutions regarding NOx reduction.

Hi Roy, I've missed the point, and I obviously have a lot to learn: this document is a very interesting reading on how to address NOx Tier II and Tier III requirements when SOx has already been taken care of...

The engine in this series of 7,300 TEU vessels is a 7-cylinder MAN B&W 7G80ME-C10.5-GI-EGRTC dual fuel type.

Very little can be seen here on this photo that would instantly point out to a gas fueled engine; gas fuel supply piping, yellow in color, can be glimpsed at the bottom of the photo.
