Description:
One of the newest class of amphibious ships is a new version of Landing Craft Utility. At one time the 1600 class of LCU's were going to be relegated to the boneyard due to the introduction of the hovercraft LCAC's. Eventually the continued need for the much less expensive LCAC was realized and the result is a Landing Craft Utility with a superstruture as seen here. I have posted photos of both the 1600 class of LCU's and the LCAC's so if you are not familiar with these amphibious landing ships you can compare the different types. It is my understanding that this new class of LCU's joined the fleet in 2006. Photo taken May 22, 2007 at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel highway rest area.
The 2023 is assigned to the U.S. Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia, the Army's Transportation Center. Thanks to razorback for info.
