5/12/1945 launched as Empire Wessex one the five ship Empire Hope class based on a SSA design which commenced with the Waiwera in 1934.
All five were destined for the NZ run and of her sisters Empire Hope was sunk during Operation Pedestal in August 1942 after one voyage to NZ, Empire Grace became SSA's Wairangi, and Empire Mercia became BSL's Empire Star. Waiwera of the same design was built directly for SSA.
As built she had accommodation for 128 passengers.
Her two surviving sisters also had similar passenger facilities.
1950 Passenger numbers reduced to 12.
1954 engine room explosion while on a voyage Bluff to Hull, 4th engineer killed.
