The "Big U" was docked at this berth at the Norfolk International Terminal for many, many years. I was once told by one of the Norfolk harbor pilots that she was there so long that they actually used her stacks as a reference mark for making their turn whenever they sailed a ship out of Newport News. As a result, the harbor pilots missed her more than anyone else did when she was finally taken away, because they had to figure out a new reference marker on which to make their turn.
