It is designed to support a range of police operations up to 200 nautical miles (370 km; 230 mi) out to sea, including detecting illegal immigration, smuggling and drug trafficking and supporting counter terrorism and search and rescue.

As well as policing duties it is able to assist operations of the Australian Fisheries Management Authority and the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service. Standard police issue firearms are carried on board and the vessel itself has provision for fitting mounted weapons in the future.
