COMMENT THIS PHOTO(3)
Loading bags of grain by hand must have been a backbreaking, dusty job, a far cry from today's modern bulk cargo handling facilities!
The State Library of South Australia has a photo of bags of grain being loaded by hand from a flat-bed railway truck aboard the sailing ketch LULU at Ardrossan in the late 1920s on the : Photograph web page.
Kind regards,
Pete

Just correcting error on previous comment, MV Exmoor sailed to Hamburg from Ardrossen, and did not visit Port Adelaide. Departure date was 21/04/62.

Last time I visited Ardrossen we tied up alongside the jetty at the townsite. Loaded a cargo of grain brought alongside in bags and cut open then poured into the holds. This was the MV Exmoor in 1962!! Topped up in Port Adelaide and sailed to Japan. Regards Anthony.
