She was built as AYTODOR, she was one of a series of Black Sea ferries, built in 1962, 1002gt, in Varna by Georgi Dimitrov Shipyard.

She took her current name PROFESSOR KOLESNIKOV when she became an environmental/research ship for the USSR Academy of Sciences in 1983.

In 1992 transferred to the GP National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In November 2000, a ship in distress with inactive engines, a broken steering wheel and 877 illegal immigrants on board was detained by the Italian Coast Guard and towed to the port of Brindisi. Where, while in custody, she sank in August 2005.

LOCATION: 40°39'20.47"N 17°57'40.44"E

The ship was dismantled on site in mid-2014.
