Lost at sea 12/31/2019

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) - Coast Guard crews are searching for five people Wednesday after their fishing boat sank west of Kodiak.

Scandies Rose, a 130-foot crab fishing vessel based out of Dutch Harbor, sank at approximately 10 p.m. Tuesday with seven people on board.

Two survivors were rescued but five people are still missing.

"We are conducting an extensive search in a 300-square mile area to locate the five missing persons from the Scandies Rose," said Lt. Wade Arnold, command duty officer at 17th District command center.

Weather will be a complicating factor for the search. There are said to be 40 mph winds, 15 to 20-foot seas and one-mile visibility.

The Coast Guard reports that rescue efforts were initiated after a mayday call was received Tuesday evening.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew was launched as was an HC-130 Hercules airplane crew. The helicopter crew arrived on site and was able to rescue the two survivors, Coast Guard officials say.

The ship's last known position was 170 miles southwest of Coast Guard Air Station in Kodiak.
