To Rolo,

Many "pinasses" - that's to say long and slim shaped stern trawlers - are usually equipped with similar arrangements of their net drums.

In fact, I think most of Brittany's deep-sea fishing fleet adopted this scheme as it's the most appropriate to enable her crew to be work on the trawl while being protected from the waves without wasting to much room for the refrigerated hold and offering too much resistance to the waves: in a way, this is a good compromise between hydrodynamics, safety rules and competitivity! :-)

Trasgu,

I think you miss my point. I have looked at hundreds of photos of French stern trawlers and been aboard a few but never have I seen this arrangement whereby you have two drums on each side of the fore and aft line and lying fore and aft of each other in such close proximity. They frequently have as many as four drums all lying in a line athwartships and occasionally a drum for'd of those right aft but not in the same framework like we have here. This vessel also does not have a stern gantry which is very unusual, I think you will agree, for a French stern trawler. I presume that the crane on the stern is used for handling the cod-ends.

Excellent photographs of this beautiful vessel. I am intrigued by the arrangement of the trawl net drums - I have never seen an arrangement like this before where there are two drums in line fore and aft of each other like this. Ingenious. Keep photos of a high technical content like this coming!
