Description:

The former Canada Steamshipline vessel Tadoussac photographed at Sharjah (UAE) in 1979. The vessel was disused and embedded in sand in the Sharjah port area, having previously served as a hotel in that location. She had disappeared by 1981, having presumably been dismantled on site.

Barry, would you mind if I used this image in a slide show on the Canada Steamship Lines' "Niagara to the Sea" services? Thanks.

Hi Marc

Unfortunately I only took the one photograph. I wish I'd taken more.

Barry. Would you have taken any other pictures of this ship while you were there? My grand father worked at the dock in Bagotville QC when these ships were around. My mother and my aunts have many stories to tell about their trips on these ships. Their favorite was Tadoussac.

This is a former Canada Steamship Lines "white fleet" ship. It was built as TADOUSSAC in 1928 and served on the St.Lawrence River until 1965. It was renamed PASSENGER No.2, and left Canada in tow of ROTESAND, and arrived in Antwerp 9 June 1966. It was then towed to Tonsberg by GEORGES LETZER.
It was in Copenhagen in 1972 as a floating hotel - not sure when it went out to Sharjah.
Thank you very much for posting this. I knew this ship very well as a child, and it brought back wonderful memories to see it again - even in such a strange setting!

As a sidelight obviously Canadian due to the name.

There is still a Tadoussac plying the Great Lakes, a bulker owned by Canadian Steamship Lines or CSL.
The correct pronoucing of the name baffles many from south of the Canadian border and it is often referred to by a colloquial name "Tattersack".

The current Tadoussac is one of my favorites and I always enjoy seeing it.

That the other Tadoussac sits in a desert in the UAE is rather bizarre.

Nice to see her again. At the time she was in Copenhagen she ware the name ST LAWRENCE. The ship was taken to Copenhagen to accommodate hotel guest in 1967 in connection with city's celebration of its 800 year birthday. since used a youth hostel, but due to fuelprice in the first oilcrises it was closed down and sold off to the Persian Gulf. She was even registered in Danish registe with callsigns OVZG from March 24. 1971 to April 14. 1975, when sold to Sharjah.

Thanks, everyone for this information and helping to clear up the mystery. She presented a strange sight marooned in the sand. I saw her in that position from 1978 until around 1981, when presumably she was dismantled. She was already disused by 1978. There had been another (more luxurious) hotel ship afloat nearby named the "Grand Flotel" but this had departed by the time I arrived in Sharjah.

Is the ex Canada Steamshipline vessel Tadoussac built in 1928 at Davie Shipbuilding & Repair Co., Ltd. Luzon, Quebec.

Sold for scrapping and arrived in tow, with RICHELIEU at Antwerp, Belgium, on June 9, 1966. Departed Antwerp for conversion to floating hotel, Februray 10, 1967. Towed to Copenhagen, Denmark, in May, 1967. Sold for service in Persian Gulf, with rebuilding at Piraeus, Greece; departed Copenhagen in tow, March 19, 1975, for Piraeus. Passed eastbound in Suez Canal, July 18, 1975, in tow of German tug FAIRPLAY X, for Sharja, near Oman, in Persian Gulf. Hull was completely imbedded in sand there as a hotel.

Interesting view, I cant give you the name but if you take a look at my posted picture 120917, it is probably the same vessel, on her way to this final destination. The date and the ship shape would fit. She a long way home! From Canada to UAE!
