I took my second masters job in 1994 on this (once) so beautiful coaster, built in Köln in 1952. SEEROSE came to Finland already in 1987 bought by a friend of mine from Borgå. I remember she was very well kept by her previous owner, the Tiedemanns couple. Later in 1988 she was sold within Finland to Kimito and thats when her decent slowly began. When I took her over the ship was in a total disorder and chaos. No running water onboard (no shower), no proper hatchboards, an old excavator installed on deck (spraying hydraulic oli everywhere) and even the charts where thrown on the wheelhouse floor. The crew was an old alcoholic motorman/mate, one deckhand and me. Somehow she had got certificates for short internationals voyages and I traded her between Aland Islands, Finland and Sweden with timber, grain and sand. Since we had no shower onboard we had an old bathtub on the aft deck for washing. The water we took from the main engine ing system. It contained a bit oil but real men don't care about that :-) Anyway all went suprisingly well, maybe my own young inexperience managed to overlook black outs or steering failiures every now and then. When the mate fell asleep in the wheelhouse I thought I had seen enough and after 3 months onboard I quit. Shortly afterwards SEEROSE went agorund outside Mariehamn in the Aland Islands even if the totally captain (former mate) and his new Mate in a similar condition thought they were in actually in Sweden!! At this time I was as Mate on TOWER JULIE and overheard these two s discussing in the VHF with the Coast Guard.
Needless to say the SEEROSE was arrested and laid up. In 1996 she was sold to Mr. Fischer in Papenburg. With Belize flag she limped (under command of another old Captain) to Kiel where he took all ships certificates and escaped the ship. Some hours later the local police found the ships documents on a parkbench in Kiel and returned them onboard. SEEROSE arrived Papenburg where she was laid up. Mr. Fischer died before SEEROSE was delivered to WI which was the original plan. In 1999 she was still there as LAURIANA and owned by Mr.Ramos from Miami. Then in 2001 she made the headlines in the Paris MOU news when she as SEEROSE I took shelter in Poole harbour enrouthe to Haiti. One deckhand lost his legs when the engine failed go astern during mooring. The MSA stopped her and MOU declared her as The Rusbucket Of The Month. From Poole she was then sold to Mr. Simon Lynn-Smith who managed to take her to Rotterdam. Now named as EROS she was still to sail to the WI. In 2002 and 2004 she was seen in Cap Verde. I suppose she is still there.
I met the Tiedemanns some years back and they were amazed of this story.
In this photo SEEROSE is in the Finnish archipelago loading timber. A tricky mooring on the barge I must say!
I was a shame to see how she was treated, a wondeful coaster who was a good sea ship, but aren't all the old ships better in the high seas than the new boxships!

The mv Seerose I, IMO number 5317367, was on passage from Germany to Haiti, carrying a cargo of
tyres, when she sought shelter from bad weather in Poole Harbour. As the vessel was attempting to come
alongside by going astern the engine failed to go astern. The mooring ropes had been secured alongside when the engine failed to slow the vessel and continued to go ahead; the slack in the remaining rope on deck was taken up violently and a crew member was caught in a bight of a mooring rope that continued pay out and amputated both his legs. He was rushed to Poole General Hospital and has sustained severe leg injuries as a result of the incident.
After the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) was informed of this incident by the Poole Harbour Master, a surveyor visited the vessel for the purpose of conducting a port State control inspection.
The MCA detained the Honduran registered general dry cargo vessel on 17 April 2000. The vessel has
been built in 1952 with a gross tonnage of 290. The MCA Surveyor, when carrying out an inspection,
found major deficiencies that led him to declare the vessel as "dangerously unsafe".
Among the deficiencies found by the MCA Surveyor was the main engine, that was unable to go astern,
further the engine room floor and vessel's deck were covered in excess oil causing health and safety and
fire risks. In total he found 39 deficiencies during his inspection, besides the above mentioned deficiencies
the vessel has also been detained on the following grounds:
l the port anchor was seized in the hawse pipe
l there was a hole in the deck between the forecastle and the forepeak tank
l there were holes in the forecastle bulkhead
l the rescue boat davit required overhauling and testing
l the covers were missing from the engine room electrical distribution boxes
l the lights in the engine room were temporary
A major cause of concern was the condition of the Chief Officer's Second Engineer's cabins, which were uninhabitable. Also the ballasted condition of the vessel was a cause of concern. She was very light in the water and the Chief Engineer advised that all the ballast lines to the tanks had been blanked of, due to having been
damaged. Only the forepeak could be ballasted and this could only done via a portable pump trough the manhole.During the course of inspection, the surveyor noted that the vessel had been given an interim Certificate of Seaworthiness and an interim Load Line Certificate for a single voyage with no commercial cargo, issued by the flag Administration Honduras on 21 March 2000.
The owner of the vessel has not come forward and have effectively dumped both the ship and her crew. The International Transport Workers' Federation has attended the vessel and is taking further action in order to settle the crew wages dispute and to obtain compensation for the injured man.
The vessel under detention since 17 April 2000 and has been abandoned by the crew. The local port Authority is discussing the issue if they will scrap it themselves or sell it to a scrapyard.
