I didn't know that, thank you for the explanation Michael. I was under the impression more than gravity itself was needed for some other lifeboats I've seen

@Cedric: It's a must for all life boats to reach the water just by means of the gravity. There is just a brake to slow down the speed if necessary, no electric device at all.

I hope they have good weather coming across the atlantic...with the lifeboats hanging over the side like that, it takes only a good wave and you are in trouble...RCI did experience that when they took one of the big ones ALLURE OR OASIS across.... good luck

On some other pictures, it seems that there are no lifeboats on port side, even if the davits are installed. Do they still have to be mounted in the Netherlands ?

Looks very ungainly from that angle.....

I believe this configuration will help when power is lost as the lifeboats are already hanging over the water so they don't need to be swung out as they need to on other ships.

Great photos Frits .... but can anyone throw light on the lifeboats being"Turned o9ut" or is their permanent position? Certainly the davits seems to be awfully complicated and one wonders how they operate and what happens in an emergency with no power???
