I was there in early 1984. The Canadian Navy used to head south in mid-winter, to paint our ships prior to participating in NATO's winter exercise. We were berthed to the left of 'Mazon'. At that time, most of her house had been removed. At the stern, one could see the patterns of 'Rio Amazonas' and 'Buenaventura'. Most of the name was painted-over, leaving 'Mazon', and the POR was Panama.
I'm quite sure about the dates - I joined the (not 'Royal', in those dark days)Canadian Navy in Feb 1983, and that port visit was the first stop on my first deployment.
I might have a few photos to post, if I can track down my old photo album.
