Description:

HIYE MARU
capsized (Named REWARD) 22.31.11N/120.18.13E 9.9.70 [Dingalan-Kaohsiung, logs]

EDIT: This casualty refers to the Hiye Maru built in 1950, by Uraga (IMO 5151660). This HIYE MARU was built in the early thirties, together with two sisters, Hikawa Maru and Heian Maru.

Her real end came about as below:
During World War II (1941-1945), the Imperial Japanese Navy converted the MV Hiye Maru, (renamed Hie Maru) into a submarine depot ship. On November 17, 1943, the Hiye Maru was torpedoed and sunk by the USS Drum (SS-228) in the Southwest Pacific Ocean northwest of New Ireland, an island in the Bismarck Archipelago.

RD77: Your are correct, and it took me some time to find what she is/was,(the IMO number of the 1950 built ship was applied, but the picture dates from 1937) I have edited the description. Please note that she is also in Miramar but as HIE MARU. (#4036219)
