Well done, Netty, an excellent photo. Though she's sailing the North Sea and the Baltic I've never crossed paths with her yet. I wonder if she has already called at Hamburg in the past. Anyway, sooner or later I'll get her:-))

No worries, Anthony - have thought myself those were Flettner rotors for a long time. xD

It's common fashion to say that Cousteau's ALCYONE has Flettner rotors... That's wrong. She has Turbosails, invented by Cousteau himself. Those dont' rotate but tilt to better angle regarding the wind & are sorta like thick wings with mechanical suction of air in to them at either side to create the difference of pressures.

Dear Neddy, the E-SHIP 1 isn't the only ship to have Flettner rotors. This is the ALCYONE of Jacques-Yves Cousteau. She was built in 1985 and have Flettner rotors. (http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=1883535).

Good evening.

Is that vessel really saving energy with the Flettner propulsion or has it been built to get subsidies from the german taxpayer???

Thanks Denis, I was wondering what those pipes were on deck, have googled ... nice piece of engineering, and indeed she is the only modern vessel that has ... who knows in the future!

Great shot! With all the advertising & promising, it's unfortunate that she's still the only modern freighter with those Flettner rotors applied.
