You are quite correct BobS, dwt should be expressed in "tonnes" or perhaps metric tons "MT", but I think any further discussion should be referred to the forum, instead of another comment thread gone wild.... Happy new year! ;-)

. . . but deadweight tonnage (DWT) (which IS related to weight) should be expressed in tonnes (of 1,000 kg)

Sorry WUKA54, but you are wrong - GT (and NT) is expressed in "register tons" - see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gross_register_tonnage

Gross Tonnage ( GT ) is not appointed number .
It is wrong way to define this data in tons . This is not related to the weight .
