Description:
The 1959-built icebreaker/survey vessel POLAR PRINCE alongside in Victoria's Inner Harbour. She was originally built for the Canadian Coast Guard as the SIR HUMPHREY GILBERT, serving until 2001. She was sold to private interests and renamed POLAR PRINCE, then later changed ownership several times before being bought by GX Technology Canada in 2009 to be used as a survey vessel.
In 2017, as part of the Canada 150 celebrations, the ship was chartered for Canada C3 - a 150-day voyage from Toronto, Ontario, up the east coast of Canada and through the Northwest Passage, and down the west coast to Victoria. During the 23000-kilometre voyage from coast to coast to coast, the ship called at numerous communities and conducted a number of scientific research projects. She concluded the voyage on October 28, 2017 when she arrived in Victoria.
