Description:
The CGM owned Atlantic Service, seen arriving at Rotterdam 5.10.85, was the first vessel to join the Atlantic Container Line (ACL) fleet. She was one of the original four G-1 vessels ordered for the Atlantic Container Line transatlantic service, and had been delivered to founder member Rederi A/B Transatlantic as Atlantic Span in 1967.
ACL became the largest operator in the trade and ordered additional vessels and in 1976 lengthened and widened the G-1's to increase container capacity from 700 TEU to 1,154 TEU.
In 1984 she transferred to the partner company and was renamed as a prelude to the introduction of the new G-3 class (since lengthened to G-3L), that today have now passed on in the wake of the latest generation.
Once the new G3 vessels were delivered, the Atlantic Service was retired and broken up in Taiwan in November 1987.
