Description:
Blue Star Line’s 1950 Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, built TASMANIA STAR was seen steaming past Portishead outbound from Avonmouth on 25th April 1968 on a voyage from Auckland.
One of many elegant ships built for Blue Star Line after the War, it was perhaps surprising, after the creation of Associated Container Transportation (ACT) in 1967, that TASMANIA STAR continued to trade until as late as 1975, arriving at Kaohsiung breakers on 20th September that year direct from Avonmouth where she had been laid up from 22nd June to 8th August.
This photograph, with an extended caption, can be seen in my book Bristol Port and Channel Nostalgia, published by Coastal Shipping.
