I am not an expert on Belgium inland waterways, but my observation was that while an appropriate master’s license was needed for whatever boat (commercial or pleasure; length and tonnage) you were navigating through the canals and rivers of Belgium, a separate pilot person was never required. Just like France and the Netherlands, these self-propelled canal boats move bulk cargo anywhere in Belgium on this marine highway using a full electronics package on board and a very defined set of operational rules.

Is a pilot required to navigate on these canals ?
