The 25-year-old Russian motor stern-trawling fish factory "Kartli" began to take on water after being struck in the wheelhouse by a huge wave in what were generally gale force 8 weather conditions and heavy seas off the west coast of Scotland in lat. 55°42'N, long. 06°46'W, on December 18, 1991. Of the 51 crew on board, 47 were safely rescued in a six-hour operation involving helicopters, but four, including the second mate and helmsman who were struck by the wave, died. The "Kartli", which was loaded with 400 tonnes of frozen fish, subsequently ran aground on the north-west corner of Gigha Island in lat. 55°42N, long. 05°45W, her engine-room flooded, with extensive damage to her bottom. Some pollution caused by leaking fuel oil was reported. (from Maritime Casualties 1963-1996 by N.Hooke)
On 18 December, 2016 on the island of Gigha, a memorial with plaque was unveiled to the memory of crew members who lost their lives in this disaster. https://yadi.sk/i/HphvBQWzPIMaMg https://yadi.sk/i/mXjUg_tIruio-A https://yadi.sk/i/ZKky0gIOGpgJmQ )
