The first of those two links is helpful, as it seems to show that PRS class used the two-word version (though, noting that on deletion she had overdue surveys and other non-compliance, so a PRS surveyor may never have been on board and seen the registry certificate).
The other link is peculiar - seems to be some sort of private list of codes for ships dated seven years after the ship became SUNNY LIMA.

The only definitive authority (Cyprus Register) is not available to us, but I would say that there is prima facie evidence that LEM ALFA may be right, and have no objection to choosing that version. If other photos come along that may help later on.

Funny, I have found two more references in the net to a vessel named Lem Beta here

Thanks all for your input.
I kept her as 'Lembeta', as per my research back in 1999.

If the admins wish me to amend the name, just say so, and I will edit it accordingly.
Regards, Rick

In Lloyd's Register 1999-2000 her name is LEMBETA.

OK guys, let's be clear.
Firstly the name is not LEM BET 1, just look on original size and it clearly an imperfect paint job

One word or two? Back to basics: there is only one authority which determines the actual name, and that is the flag state, in this case, Cyprus. Everything else should follow the CYP registration certificate - in practice errors can occur, though they are rare.

When the ship changed owner and name in 1997, Lloyd's Register recorded LEMBETA, that would probably have been based in a data feed from the Cyprus Register - or possibly also Class, which was PRS (Polish Register of Shipping) at the time. Each of those three could make a mistake. Owners would have had a clear view on what they wanted the name to be, but the flag certificate trumps that. Brokers, AIS, press, grosstonnage, photos etc are all less reliable sources.

When errors did occur, on confirmation LR entries were corrected (those who remember the orange supplements will remember that there would be quite a few of these, spelling of ship or owner name being the most common).

In this case we can assume that, if any query was ever raised, the Cypriot registry did not confirm anything other than LEMBETA.

Victor, also Miramar has the ship as LEMBETA, and they would have taken it from an offical register, such as Lloyds. I am with you that the name should be changed, but I am just explaining why this wrong name came about.

Well Pieter,i don´t know who are the bean counters you reefer, but the only reference to this ship as Lembeta is that from the disappeared Grsstonnage.com,so administration should amend the name for Lem Beta owned at that time by the also disapperad Lemissoler Reederei Limited-Cyprus

Victor, once the bean counters who make the official registers have decided that the name is LEMBETA, you can show every shot that tells you that there are actually tow parts of the name, it will not convince them that they got it wrong.

Victor, they did not yet finish the A? Indeed there is a small section in the middle which distinguishes it from the 1 I read before. The space between the M and the B however is clearly there.

Actually I read LEM BETA

Any suggestion as to why the painted name is not the official one?
