Description:

This photo was taken on December 3, 1976, at the end of the terrible storm that devastated the Landes coast two nights before. On the beach of Lespecier, in Mimizan, two ships ran aground. The cargo ship VIRGO which had left Bayonne on November 30th and was en route to Lisbon, and the oil tanker APOLLONIAN WAVE, which had an engine breakdown while en route from Falmouth to San Estaban de Pravia to be broken up. At that time, I was 12 years old. These two shipwrecks particularly moved me. I was a young fan of the adventures of Tintin and I had in front of me the RAMONA and the SPEEDOL STAR, designed by Hergé. This photo from my personal collection was given to me by Claude Juglin. I tell all this story in my book "Les gisants de la plage".
