Description:

PETER WESSEL built in 1937 by Aalborg Vaerft A/S, Aalborg, Danmark, yard number 56. Dim:. 68,02 x 13,07 x 4,81 m, later lengthened to 77.52 m, 1415 grt, 700 nrt, later 1956 grt, 951 dwt, 7-cyl, Atlas diesel, 1910 kW, 17 knots, 500 passengers (later 620), 141 berths in cabins (later 209), 60 cars (later 70). Delivered on 4th July 1937 to Norsk-Dansk Turistfart A/S, Oslo, Norge. Operating for Larvik-Frederikshavnferjen A/S, route Larvik - Frederikshavn. April 1940 requisitioned by German navy, used in the Skagerrak and in the Baltic. Early 1945 renamed HANSESTADT DANZIG. In May 1945 returned under Norwegian flag as PETER WESSEL, repaired and July 1946 again sailing across the Skagerrak. In winter 1956 / 1957 lengthened by Aalborg Vaerft A/S, Aalborg. Early 1968 laid-up, “II” added to the name, June 1968 sold to Ignazio Messina & Co at Genua, renamed JOLLYEMME. Now vehicle carrier between Genua and Tripoli. In 1973 renamed LIDO, route Genua - Las Palmas de Tenerife, in 1974 again JOLLYEMME. Autumn 1981 sold to La Spezia for demolition. Photo from Nasjonalbiblioteket, license: public domain.
