Description:

Whale factory "Soviet Ukraine" and "Soviet Russia" were built in 1959-1961. in Nikolaev, Ukraine, they had a displacement of 44,900 tons, a length of 217.5 m and a crew of more than 520 people.., per day, production of up to 1000 tons of fat and 200 tons of fruit flour with 100% whale carcass content. Although, in fact, only the Japanese at their bases achieved 72% of the power of the whale carcass. On the first flight, there were 640 people on board the "Soviet Russia". For the period 1961-72. whaling flotilla "Soviet Russia" caught about 54,000 whales, it consisted of a whaler and 21 whalers (project 393). In the 1970s, an attempt was made to supply Primorye and the Far East of the USSR with whale meat, but it did not receive great popularity among consumers . In 1980, the "Soviet Russia" made its last whaling voyage and after that settled at the pier for about 7 years. In the late 80s, the "Soviet Russia" whale base was converted into a floating base for receiving and processing fish in Singapore. Photo by A. Mukhin end 80's.
