One of Daniel K. Ludwig's vessels fitted with his skinny pipe-funnel, the PHOENIX, is here seen at Baltimore in 1974.
She was built 1954 at Kure by National Bulk Carriers Shipyard, which also was under Ludwig's control, as he had leased it from the Japanese for 10 years. The PHOENIX was of 49062 t.dw, and was one of the world's largest vessels when delivered in January 1954.
She was registered on Universe Tankships Inc, and had Liberian flag.
The vessel was badly damaged in an explosion 17/11-1974 while on the West African coast off Dakar, and was towed to Lisbon. She arrived there 4/12-1974, and was laid up.
On 12/3-1978 she arrived at Santander under tow from Lisbon for demolition.
