The funny thing is that the worse the technical condition of the ship, the more visible the message is that SAFETY IS MOST IMPORTANT... There was a time when, as the third officer, I personally prepared stencils for painting such inscriptions or even painted them myself. It was strange because the ships on which I worked at that time (belonging to a Dutch shipowner based in Gdynia / currently in Sopot) were floating shipyards and their condition was sometimes terrifyingly bad.
Where (supposedly) safety was paramount, several fatal accidents occurred in a short period of time.
The commented photo shows that SAFETY FIRST... The condition of this forty-year-old ship flying the TOGO flag must be excellent. Safety information is binding.
