Description:

S.M.S. Helgoland was I believe, built at Rijeka (Fuime) and was completed in 1912, as was her sister ship the S.M.S. ADMIRAL SPAUN, but I am not sure about this. But I do know that a family member on my mother’s side (Ivan Božanić – Grundbuschsblatt No: 2748, 4-te Kompagnie) served on her as a marine 2nd class. He participated and survived the 1914-1918 conflict, although Helgoland did not survive WWI.
This old postcard-type picture was taken at Pula and there are a few still in existence because every sailor who served on her received a photo of her. This one is signed by his discharging officer in 1917 (cross-referenced to Ivan's discharge papers)
