One of the newest class of amphibious ships is a new version of Landing Craft Utility. At one time the 1600 class of LCU's were going to be relegated to the boneyard due to the introduction of the hovercraft LCAC's. Eventually the continued need for the much less expensive LCAC was realized and the result is a Landing Craft Utility with a superstruture as seen here. I have posted photos of both the 1600 class of LCU's and the LCAC's so if you are not familiar with these amphibious landing ships you can compare the different types.
