Description:

The Voyageur Pioneer tied up at the Cargill elevator in Sarnia, Ontario on March 12, 2008. This is where the ship has been docked since its last run before the locks closed and the lakes and harbors began to freeze up. When the navigation season begins the Voyageur Pioneer will be sailing as the Kaministiquia as it and the Voyageur Independent have been purchased by Lower Lakes. It undoubtedly will at some point have its blue hull repainted into the Lower Lake gray and white scheme.

Technically not a Great Lakes bulker but in its present incarnation it has not been sailing the high seas so I have placed it where I think it belongs!

UPDATE: Within a day or two of when this photo was taken, the Voyageur Pioneer sailed to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, on Lake Michigan's Green Bay, and currently (March 23, 2008) is being repainted from the blue and white "Voyageur" scheme to the gray, white and black livery of Lower Lakes Towing, Ltd.. Upon completion the ship will be renamed Kaministiquia. By my reckoning, this will be the 4th distinctive paint scheme worn by this ship in its different namings (Sasketchewan Pioneer, Lady Hamilton, Voyageur Pioneer, and now Kaministiquia, a name that will not be popular with those that have to write it on color slides!). Her first paint scheme as the Sask. Pioneer was a bright yellow, orange and red scheme that was quite spectacular..

Hi Jeff! Good to hear from you. Wondering if you had come out from under the snowbanks yet. Here's to a good navigation season in Erie and lots of photos! :-D

Just dying to see these new ones in these colours.Their fleet is rapidly growing in numbers.Running close to CSL in ship numbers. What happened to the fleet she was originally with and where did MARITIME TRADER go?

Thanks for your comments -- I really appreciate them! :-D
Say goodbye to the blue and white paint as this vessel is being reparted in Wisconsin as I write!

Thanks Jim, I appreciate the comment! Hope to catch the new scheme and name when she heads down the lakes. Last year she was trading down to Quebec City and I saw her 3-4 times.

Incredible, just like the Spruce and Birch, very large ships to become 'lakers'
