Ole -She's a Wood-Chip Carrier and the "big bins" are hoppers which the wood-chips are loading into and then into the holds . These ships are light scantling built , in other words have lesser structural strength than a normal bulk carrier .. Because of this lower scantling they can only carry light cargoes such as wood-chips, tapioca, soya bean meal , alumina and anything basically over 55 cft., to the tonne. A 40,000 dwat wood-chip vessel can have the equivalent grain cubic of a 65,000 dwat "Panamax" .
