Description:
American Republic, laden with a cargo of stone from Stoneport, Michigan, bound for the Mittal Steel dock at the southern end of the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland, heads up river after making a very tight turn at Collision Bend, 6:24 p.m. 1 July 2005.
The American Republic is considered to be the most manoueverable vessel in the world. It has both bow and stern thrusters, [b]eight rudders[/b], and two variable-pitch propellors.
In 1996 the vessel carried the Olympic Torch from Detroit to Cleveland as part of the torch's relay to Atlanta, Georgia for the '96 Olympic Games.
