WELCOME TO SHIPSPOTTING.COM
Description:
The Great Lakes bulker American Century unloads low sulfer coal from Montana's Tongue River Valley (transported by railroad from Montana to Supeior, Wisconsin then by laker to the power plant on the St. Clair River) at a Detroit Edison coal-fired electricity generating plant on the St. Clair just south of St. Clair, Michigan- that is a lot of St. Clairs! The former Columbia Star (1981-2006) is 1,000 feet long and 105 feet wide and is designed for the iron ore and coal trade. Its length prohibits it from ever leaving North America's Great Lakes so it is a true Great Lakes bulker although it certainly does not have the design aesthetics of the traditional "laker." The Clean Air Act, passed by, and updated, the U.S. Congress mandates maximum sulfur emissions from the industrial burning of coal and the subbitiminous coal in southeast Montana and northeast Wyoming can be burned without exceeding this level. Most power plants located in the U.S. Midwest are close to extensive fields of high sulfur-high BTU bitiminous coal so will chose to mix low sufur western coal with high sulfur Appalachian coal and low sulfur Appalachian coal, the latter of which is far more exensive than the western low sufur coal.
